Pharmacy Direct is pioneering the implementation of combined robotic systems in South Africa, setting a new standard in medication management. In 2021, the business introduced state-of-the-art robots that use advanced algorithms and precision engineering to dispense medications accurately and efficiently. This approach significantly reduces the risk of medication errors, optimises storage and enhances productivity. As a result, the time from script receipt to medication delivery has been drastically reduced, ensuring prompt patient access. This initiative directly supports SDG 3.8 by improving access to safe, adequate, quality and affordable essential medicines.
In partnership with the Department of Health, the public division plays a pivotal role in the government’s Central Chronic Medicines Dispensing and Distribution programme. It provides care to up to 1.9 million patients and improves access to essential medicines — further aligning with SDG 3.8. Medication adherence is crucial for positive health outcomes and Pharmacy Direct’s innovative approach addresses key barriers to consistent medication use.
Pharmacy Direct makes medications more affordable by removing delivery and admin fees and offering competitive dispensing rates.
Deliveries reach all nine provinces, including main centres, townships, suburbs and outlying areas, ensuring broad accessibility.
With 150 clinically trained staff, Pharmacy Direct offers personalised pharmacist support — empowering patients with the knowledge needed for effective medication management.
